Life LessonsBasement Water Damage Caused My Wires to Short-Circuit

May 27, 2021by Daniel0

In the middle of the night, I woke up to a loud sound coming from my basement.

It sounded like something was dripping and it turned out that water had been seeping into my walls for days!

The whole area was damp and moldy to boot!

I called in an emergency repairman as soon as possible because not only were there leaks from the gutter but also my wires had become wet and were starting to short-circuit.

Turns out, with all that flooding, it reminded me of when I was younger, watching my father work on our house.

This is when I first saw my father working on the gutters.

It wasn’t even raining at the time, but he would climb up these high ladders to make sure our gutters were free of debris so the home would be safe from water damage and to prevent other problems that could happen if we didn’t take care of it.

Now as an adult, his words ring in my ears every time it rains, especially after my home flooded. “If you want your rain gutter guards to work properly,” he says, “you’ve got to keep them clean!”

This was a great lesson for me. I will never forget it.

Imagine if your basement floods with water from an overflowing gutter and it starts seeping into your walls and the moisture is ruining your wall insulation and getting into the wiring of your appliances.

What would you do? Or, let me ask, how should you have prevented it from happening in the first place?

Now, because you didn’t prevent it, you will be faced with expensive repairs that could have been avoided had you installed the proper rain gutters or gutter guards on all sides of your house!

Gutter guards are a simple step toward protecting yourself from these costly surprises by preventing water from accumulating around the foundation of the home. Rain gutters also help keep leaves out of downspouts which helps prevent clogs!

The next time you are considering installing gutters and downspouts for your home, it might be a good idea to install rain guards as well. These will keep the debris and leaves out of your gutters.

Rain gutter guards also prevent leaves from clogging up the drain system which can lead to expensive repairs like busted pipes during the winter months!
